Central Diagnostic Unit

The Central Diagnostic Unit is specialised in highly infectious diseases. Since 2012, the Central Diagnostics Unit has been accredited according to DIN EN ISO 15189 ("Medical Laboratories"). The diagnostic services is not only available to the Bundeswehr but also to the civilian health care.

The Central Diagnostic Unit also develops diagnostic procedures and participates in international projects to standardise the diagnosis of highly infectious diseases.

Since 1 January 2025, the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology has been collaborating with the Robert Koch Institute, the Swedish Public Health Agency (Folkhälsomyndigheten), and the Portuguese Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge in one of the newly designated EU Reference Laboratories for Public Health in the field of "High-risk, emerging, and zoonotic bacterial pathogens" (EURL-PH-HEZB). It is one of the newly established EU Reference Laboratories for Public Health (EURLs) operating under the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
